John, I recently had a similar vision problem: flashing lights and big, sparkly floaters. I've been told I have posterior vitreous detachment--which means that the jelly inside my eyes is clumping up as I age, and triggering these odd visual disturbances. It's all settled down now, apart from a few minor problems. I hope you don't have anything worse.
